Pella’s Steady Set Window Installation System with Mike Guertin

Independent Editorial Review with Mike Guertin

Project Role: Lead Cinematographer (DOP) and Editor

Client: Fine Homebuilding (Editorial)

Location: Professional Shop / On-Location

Production Type: Independent Product Review & Technical Tutorial

Project Overview

This project was a purely editorial review conducted by Fine Homebuilding to put the new Pella Steady Set system through a rigorous, independent test. Featuring industry expert Mike Guertin, the goal was to provide an unbiased look at whether the system lives up to its "faster and safer" claims in a real-world scenario.

As the Lead Cinematographer and Editor, I was responsible for capturing the technical reality of the installation. Unlike a promotional brand film, my focus was on the "how-to" and the "teardown," documenting Mike’s honest assessment of the hardware—including both its strengths and the specific nuances he discovered during the build.

Technical Execution: A DOP’s Perspective

Capturing an independent review requires a "documentary" approach to technical clarity. I worked alongside the Editorial Director to ensure the video remained objective and focused on the builder's perspective.

Documenting the Mechanical Features

Production Focus: I utilized stable, close-up framing to show the Top Stabilizer and Reversible L-Brackets. Since this was an editorial test, it was important to capture the "feel" of the hardware—the clicks, the detents, and the physical effort required to set the window solo.

  • Key Detail: Capturing the specific "Pro Tips" Mike developed on-site, such as driving an extra screw into the shim blocks to ensure they remained secure during handling.

Building Science: The Flashing Fin

Production Focus: Mike provides a critical distinction between a flashing fin and a nailing flange. I made sure to highlight the "dimples" on the bottom fin that promote drainage—a small but vital detail for building science that I ensured was clearly visible for the professional audience.

The Editorial Edit: Clarity over Promotion

As the Lead Editor, I took full ownership of the post-production,

ensuring the video maintained the authoritative voice of Fine Homebuilding.

Vetted Technical Pacing

Because this was an independent review, the process was methodical. We utilized a custom mockup wall rather than a live job site to ensure every angle of the installation was visible and controlled.

Expert Preparation

To ensure the highest level of accuracy, Mike Guertin performed a full "pre-shoot" installation. This allowed us to bypass the unboxing and focus entirely on the seasoned insights he gained from hands-on testing.

Technical Call-outs

I integrated clear visual markers for Mike's discoveries, such as his specific technique for removing the window once the stabilizer is engaged—a "real-world" solution that adds immense value to an editorial review.

Transparency First

The edit was structured to prioritize the sequence of operations and the physical mechanics of the Steady Set system, providing builders with a transparent look at how the hardware actually performs under pressure.

Behind The Scenes: Editorial Production

Shooting independent reviews requires a lean, mobile setup that doesn't interfere with the expert's process. Because I was managing the entire technical stack solo, my focus was entirely on the primary frames.
